Suicide Bomb Attack Kills 21 And Leaves Dozens Injured At Mosque In Afghan Capital
A suicide bomb attack at a mosque in Kabul during evening prayers on Wednesday killed at least 21 people, including a prominent cleric, and seriously wounded at least 33 others.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack that has left so many people dead and wounded in the Afghan capital of Kabul. Several children were believed to have been among the injured.
The so-called Islamic State group's local affiliate has intensified attacks against civilians and the Taliban after the group came to power last August as US troops were in the final stages of their withdrawal from the country. Last week, Islamic State claimed responsibility for the killing of well-known Afghan cleric and Taliban supporter Rahimullah Haqqani.
The attack was reportedly carried out by a suicide bomber at the Siddiquiya Mosque in the Kher Khanna neighborhood.
An eyewitness who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity said that the slain cleric was Mullah Amir Mohammad Kabuli.
Taliban-appointed spokesman for the Kabul police chief, Khalid Zadran, confirmed the explosion inside a mosque in northern Kabul but did not provide a casualty toll. Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban, condemned the attack and vowed that the "perpetrators of such crimes will soon be brought to justice and will be punished".
