Man Mauled To Death At Accra Zoo In Ghana After Climbing Into Lion Enclosure

A man has been killed by a lion after climbing into its enclosure at the Accra Zoo in Ghana, the government said in a statement.

At around midday on Sunday, the man, believed to be in his forties, climbed over a tall mesh fence and entered an enclosure that was home to a lion, a lioness, and two cubs.

He was spotted by security guards after he had climbed over the fence, it is believed that the mother who was with her two cubs jumped on the man as soon as he got inside the enclosure. Benito Owusu Bio, deputy minister for lands and natural resources, said: "The lions have cubs so if you come too close they may feel you are trying to take away their babes. "We ask the public to desist from doing anything like this." The body of the man was recovered from the enclosure and transported to a local morgue.

The reason for the man entering the enclosure has not yet been established. The zoo stated that no lions had escaped and that the attack took place because of the victim trespassing into their territory.

Local police are working alongside officials from the Accra Zoo to establish to full details into the incident. Police said in a statement: "After the necessary forensic examination of the scene, the body was removed and has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy. "The police are working with the management of the zoo and the forestry commission to get to the bottom of this unfortunate incident."
