Local Man Dies In York After Being Restrained By Shop Worker & Members Of The Public
A man has died in York, England after an incident at a jewellery shop. An altercation apparently took place that resulted in a shop worker and members of the public restraining the man.
Police responded to calls to Mappin & Webb jewelers on Coney Street, at around 4.40pm on Tuesday after a number of reports about a disturbance at the shop. A 39-year-old local man, Samuel Diatta was being restrained by a shop employee and other members of the public. The man suffered medical difficulties during the incident before being taken to York District Hospital where he died at 6.40pm. Three men, one aged in his 50s and two aged in their 40s were arrested in connection with the incident after being questioned in custody and were released on bail.
Detective Inspector Steve Menzies of North Yorkshire Police said: "This is a very tragic incident. "Samuel's family are being supported by specially trained officers and I would ask that their privacy is respected to allow them time to grieve their loss. "I am also aware that there has been some incorrect reporting as to what has happened, which is distressing for the family. "We ask that people do not speculate or spread incorrect information. "However, it is important that we speak to anyone who has witnessed this incident, or who saw Mr Diatta immediately before the incident."
