A homeless man who was allegedly pushed to his death from the top of a cliff has been named as Dale Simmons. His body was discovered on Thursday near Chalk Pit Hill in Chatham, Kent, the day after he is believed to have died.

Four teenagers aged between 16 and 18 who knew the victim have been taken into police custody over the death of the 42-year-old, which authorities are treating as suspicious.

The father of the victim, Peter Simmons confirmed the death of his son on Facebook.

He wrote: "It is with a sad and heavy heart Dee and I announce the death of our only son Dale Simmons. Rest in peace wink."

A friend also wrote: "Oh wow just seen about Dale Simmons, fly high another one taken far too soon."

Dale was well known to a local homeless charity, the Gillingham Street Angels. The charities chief executive, Neil Charlick, said: "It's very sad for him and his family.

"He was local and well-known in the area and to us. He was a nice fella - a lovely and bubbly type of guy.

"He was a sound bloke and nobody had a bad word to say about him. He was always lovely and friendly."

A spokesman for Kent police said: "Police officers attended an area near Chalk Pit Hill at around 11 am on Thursday where the body of a man aged in his 40s was located. It is believed he died at some point the previous evening after suffering injuries consistent with a fall from a height and his death is being treated as suspicious.

"The man's next of kin have been informed and a murder investigation is now being carried out by Major Crime detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate. "An 18-year-old man, a 17-year-old boy, and two 16-year-old boys were arrested in connection with the man's death. They are all believed to have been known to the victim and remain in custody at this time."
